Summer Reading and Renewal

Book: Cellular Wisdom by Joan C. King, Ph.D., a fellow coach and neuroscientist and professor at Tufts University School of Medicine for 20 years (2004, Celestial Arts)

In her introduction, in a section titled “Stepping Off into Space”, Joan described her decision to parasail, even though she is generally paralyzed by heights.  “Yet something inside told me I had to do it.  I needed to perform a daring action, to demonstrate that I was ready to break free of my old way of being….I had reached what many would call the pinnacle of success.  But I felt overwhelmed …Academia had been my home…a way of life. ..Yet everything I had learned about neuroscience was telling me that it was time to make a change….I had come to believe that this (same) principle-that living systems function by directing their activities from their core-applies to life at every level.  I knew, without question, that if I did not begin to live from the center of my being, I would collapse, or explode from the tension.” (p.2-3)

I, too, have experienced some fear of mountain drop offs, after being in a car-bus accident on a mountain pass.  This summer, despite my fear, I participated in a high ropes course in the Colorado Mountains (see photo, below: I am on the right.  It helped having  a coach-like buddy, encouraging me.)  While I was there, I took a week without the computer or TV, and read the first 90 pages of the book on the way back to Kansas City .

“Stepping off, “ the week of renewal, a lot of reflection and prayer, and some coaching for me resulted in my decision to not only partner with my clients in calling forth and renewing their creativity (individually and in groups), but committing to focus on my own.  Hence this letter, and drafting a proposal for syndicating a Renewing Your Spirit or Increasing Your PEP column, contacting NPR to do a program series on the same, and an idea to pitch to Starbuck’s.  (If you have any contacts to help me with these ideas, please let me know)  You may read my PEP article and others on the articles page of my website: http://www.marilynoh.com/articles.html

MORE ABOUT IT:  To find out more about this book, if you are in Kansas City, I am presenting on it at the Central Exchange’s Business by the Book luncheon programs, 9/11 at South, and 10/3 Downtown) www.centralexchange.org  I had the pleasure of getting to know the author, Joan King, at this year’s Association of Coach Training Organizations’ annual meeting in Boulder.  As delightful and knowledgeable as she is, the neuroscience part of the book was challenging for me to follow: I skimmed for main points.  (My dad, the retired MD and, beginning at age 70, Episcopal priest who has lead programs on science and religion would have had an easier time.)

With September coming up, reinvigorated, I am offering you, special readers, a ½ hour conditional phone consult: where we talk about one of your desired outcomes and decide if we want to work together as coach/client.  If you want to take advantage of this special offer, please contact me with possible times and we will schedule your consult.

To schedule a Renewal Retreat for you and your group, please contact me.

UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS:

12/4 At the CX as part of their Focus on Business Series: Increasing PEP (Peace, Energy, Prosperity; Performance/Effectiveness/Profitability)

Today’s entrepreneurs, executives, managers, and professionals face ever increasing performance targets, lightening-fast change, 24-7 work demands, and intense work climates.  Family schedules and personal obligations add more demands to already over-committed schedules.  We can easily see how our more-than-busy, stressful lives deplete energy, effectiveness, focus and creativity, and negatively effect productivity, performance and profitability (PEP).

Executive coach Marilyn O’Hearne, M.S.W., MCC addresses the work/life/balance issue, offering insights into what gets in the way of achieving balance and offering tips for overcoming the obstacles.  You’ll learn how increased PEP can enhance your business and personal lives, promote creativity and help you craft the business and personal life you’ll love.

I'm doing a similar program for ewomennetwork on 10/12 at Homestead Country Club, if you or someone you know would be interested in atttending.

NEXT NEWSLETTER: A commentary on an article from the Conference Board Review, “A Magazine of ideas and Opinion” Jan/Feb 07. Fellow coach Marshall Goldsmith (author/co-author of 22 books, including most recently What Got You Here Won’t Get You There) writes an article on The Success Delusion.
