Supervision, when you hear that word, what image comes to mind? You may think of someone who had authority over you and perhaps did not use it well. I know I have, unfortunately, and it destroyed trust.
That is not what I am here to talk about today. What great organizational supervisors and coaching supervisors have in common is cultivating a culture of credibility, trust and support which supports development of superpowers. Successful supervisors also deliver effective, constructive feedback. Supervision contributes as well to quality assurance and professional development, which more and more organizations are expecting from coaches. Coaches, I invite you to our coaching supervision group, “a collaborative learning practice to continually build the capacity of the coach through reflective dialogue for the benefit of both coaches and clients…offering a richer and broader opportunity for support and development.” International Coach Federation
As a coaching supervisor now and also in previous roles, I find a key component of SUPERVISION is providing a place to recharge and reflect on your work not only for your own professional development but also in order to provide maximum value to your client, their organization, and stakeholders; a success ripple effect.
I have enjoyed discovering through coaching supervision *Nancy Kline’s book, More Time to Think, A Way of Being in the World. I resonate with her spacious approach to establishing a thinking environment, which you can do, anywhere, anytime!
And if you know me, you understand my special fondness for many of her 10 components of the thinking environment, but especially for diversity: Welcoming divergent thinking and diverse group identities, which results in up to 35% increased profitability (McKinsey). She builds a strong business case for cultivating a thinking environment, including saving 62% of Senior Management’s time through transforming meetings.

*I mistakenly say Nancy Brown rather than Nancy Kline in the video. Nancy Brown was another inspirational community and political leader.
